The Defiance of Shaytan

 

After the creation of Adam (Peace Be Upon Him), Allah taught him the names of many things. What Allah taught or What were these name is not revealed to us. The Allah turns to the Angels and asks them:

"He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?”

Quran 2:31

The Angels then replied:

“They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.””

Quran 2:32

So Allah says:

“Allah said, “O Adam! Inform them of their names.” Then when Adam did, Allah said, “Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?””

Quran 2:33

Then Allah said to the Angels, to prostate before Adam (Peace Be Upon Him). All the Angels followed the command of Allah and fell into prostration.

But there was one who was standing and he was Iblees. He refused to prostate before Adam (Peace Be Upon Him) and acted arrogantly. So Allah asked him, why did he not prostate when He has commanded it so. So Iblees replied, why should I prostate to Him when You created Him from clay and me from fire.

As it’s in the Quran:

“Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What is the matter with you that you did not join others in prostration?”

He replied, “It is not for me to prostrate to a human You created from sounding clay moulded from black mud.”

Remember Iblees is a Jinn and not an Angel, hence he has free will just like humans, and can disobey God.

This defiance of Iblees and the arrogance shown by him, led him to fall from his ranks, being cursed by Allah and earned him the title of Shaytan.

As Allah says in Quran Al-Hijr verse 34:

Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed.”
